Malta Theory Test Booking 2026: Centre, Fee and How to Book
You book the Malta theory test by calling the Theory Test Centre on 21 221520 and taking the next available slot. You must be at least 18, hold a learner's permit, and pay the €30.25 test fee. The centre is at Gwardamangia Hill, Pietà, and you present your ID card on the day.
Booking is a phone call to the centre
Transport Malta's instruction is one line: "To book an appointment, candidates may call the Theory Test Centre on 21 221520." That is the whole published booking procedure. You call, you take a slot, you turn up.
The centre's own booking listing shows the same desk as +356 212 271 90, or 2122 7190 in local form, so if one number does not answer, the other reaches the same place.
The portal named in the same sentence of Transport Malta's page is the route for something else. Its rule is that the "Application for Learner Permit must be processed online on www.licenzji-xufiera.gov.mt", so the permit goes through the portal and the appointment goes through the phone.
What you need before the centre will book you
Transport Malta lists three requirements to apply to sit the theory test: you "must be at least 18 years old", you must be "in possession of a Learner's Permit", and you must "pay a fee of €30.25". It adds one more thing for test day: "Present ID card before sitting for the test."
The learner's permit is the gate, and it is worth knowing its cost before you plan anything: the permit is applied for online, carries a payment of €23.25, and is issued for three years. If you have not started that application, it is the real first step, because the theory test is not open to you until the permit is in hand.
Two wrinkles that catch people out. Applicants who must prove 185 days of residence may be asked for documents (tax returns, FS3 forms, utility bills, a lease countersigned by a notary), and holders of a non-Maltese driving licence must complete a DRV029 declaration before a Maltese licence can be finalised.
Where the test is held, and the hours the centre keeps
The centre is at Gwardamangia Hill, Pietà. Transport Malta's page states it plainly: "The Theory Test Centre is now located at Gwardamangia Hill, Pieta." The centre's booking listing gives the fuller address as Gwardamangia Hill, Gwardamangia, Pietà PTA1312.

Gozo candidates do not cross to Malta. Transport Malta runs Gozo sessions "every fortnight on Monday" at the NGO Centre, Ministry for Gozo, Triq il-Madonna tar-Rummiena, Xewkija. Fortnightly is the number to plan around: book early.
What you pay, and how the payment works
The theory test fee is €30.25. Transport Malta states "Pay a fee of €30.25" as one of the requirements to sit, and the centre's booking listing repeats "Pay a fee of €30.25".
How you pay it is the one detail the two sources describe differently. The centre's listing says "cash and card payments". Transport Malta's page states "Note that cash payments are not accepted." Neither page says which of the two applies to the test fee, so nothing is assumed here: confirm it when you call the centre, before you turn up with a note in your pocket.
Do not budget from driving-school pages. One Malta driving school lists the theory test at €31.25, and an aggregator guide quotes €30.25; neither is the Authority. The figure that ships here is Transport Malta's: €30.25.
If you need to sit again, a theory re-sit costs €22.50, set in the fee schedule of the driving licence regulations and repeated in the licensing portal's FAQ. Transport Malta form DE 001 is not quoted on this page, so the translator-assistance fee is not stated as fact. Ask the centre when you book.
What you have booked: the format, and what to bring on the day
The test is 45 minutes, 35 multiple-choice questions, 30 correct to pass. Transport Malta: "The test, which takes 45 minutes, is made up of 35 multiple choice questions and you need to answer 30 correctly to pass the test."
Three more things worth knowing before the day. It is a computer-based multiple-choice exam and some questions ask you to choose more than one correct answer; the subjects are "defined in the Fourth Schedule of the Regulations", meaning the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations, S.L. 65.18; and those who pass are given "a certificate indicating a pass".
The centre's listing is blunt about punctuality: "Appointment will be cancelled if Candidate is late." Treat the slot time as the arrival time.
Bring your ID card and the fee. The questions the test is drawn from are published by Transport Malta itself, in English and Maltese, for cars (category B) and motorcycles (category A), alongside the Road Code. That is the material TheoryBuddy practises on, in the official format.
